Frequently Asked
Questions
DO I NEED A VISA FOR SOUTH AFRICA?
No visa is necessary for entry. Entry requirements for U.S. Citizens are as follows:
-A valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your departure date
-Two consecutive blank visa pages in your passport
-Proof of onward/return travel.
DO I NEED SHOTS/IMMUNIZATIONS TO ENTER SOUTH AFRICA?
No immunizations are required of U.S. Citizens for entry. However, you will need a Yellow Fever vaccination if you are coming from or traveling through (more than 12 hours) a country on the high risk list. Please refer to the link provided: https://www.southafrica.net/gl/en/travel/article/yellow-fever-entry-requirements
WHERE SHOULD WE STAY?
We are providing a share house for a large group. The house will be able to accommodate 16-18 people. If you’d like a more private option we can refer you to Airbnb’s and hotels in two of our favorite neighborhoods. The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and Greenpoint. We also suggest Camp’s Bay and Seapoint near Clifton Beach.
WILL I NEED AN ADAPTER FOR MY ELECTRONICS?
Yes. You will need a Type M Plug adapter. Voltage is 220/230V.
HOW WILL I GET AROUND? CAN I USE UBER OR LYFT?
The suggested transportation apps are Uber and Bolt, Lyft is not available. We will provide transportation to and from the wedding and the other scheduled group activities.
ARE CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS ACCEPTED? CAN I USE CASH (USD)?
USD is accepted for tips and sometimes beauty services but we do not suggest bringing USD. The national currency is South African Rand (ZAR). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted and ATMs are easily accessible to withdraw ZAR.
IS ENGLISH SPOKEN IN SOUTH AFRICA?
While there are 11 official languages in South Africa, you’ll almost always find someone who speaks English.
AM I EXPECTED TO TIP IN SOUTH AFRICA?
Yes. Be prepared to tip. South Africa has a strong tipping culture. In many customer-facing industries workers rely on tips, similar to The US. Restaurant staff will expect around 10%, but leaving 12%–15% will generate bigger smiles.
WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE IN OCTOBER IN CAPE TOWN?
October in Cape Town is a pleasant spring month with mild-to-warm, sunny days and cool evenings. Expect average highs around 70 degrees and lows near 55 degrees, with lower chances of rainfall and occasional windy days. Dress for spring with light layers for cooler evenings and possible wind. Comfortable beach days are still an option, however the water will be cold.
WILL THERE BE ACTIVITIES WHERE MY PRESENCE IS REQUESTED DURING THE WEEK OUTSIDE OF THE WEDDING?
Yes we will have group activities scheduled where your presence is requested but not required. However, we would love to see you all at the welcome dinner and wedding ceremony of course. RSVP and information (including cost and transportation) to optional events will become available closer to the wedding week.
